Maltepe residents enthusiastically greeted the one month long Republic Festival organized by the municipality with an opening concert from world famous Grammy award winner Maya Azucena.

The “My Republic” celebrations to be held in every district  of the borough, , organized by  Maltepe Municipality,  on the 94th anniversary of the founding of the republic, that will last for one month started with an opening concert from a world famous American singer Maya Azucena held at  Beşçeşmeler square. Concert was attended by Maltepe  Deputy Mayor Melih Morsünbül and department heads, Cultural Attaché from the  American Consulate  in Istanbul Catherine Roden and Sevil Sezen, Press Attaché Melissa O'Shaughnessy and Press Consultant Erdem Güneş. The event where the  opening speech was made by Melih Morsünbül, continued with a speech from Cultural Attaché from the  American Consulate  in Istanbul Catherine Roden.
MAGNIFICENT CONCERT FROM AZUCENA 
Roden in her speech said they were very honoured to participate in the celebrations and added, “Maya descended from heaven. In fact she’s from New York.  I am sure you will feel her songs in your bodies and hearts” after which she left the for  Maya Azucena.  Azucena sang a series of her amazing songs  for the  Maltepe residents. Afterwards the  Grammy award winner artist was accompanied by Turkeys first female flute player Burcu Karadağ.  Azucena’s songs specially the  one titled “I am on a Long Thin Road” accompanied by the female flute  player was much admired  by the audience. Afterwards the audience accompanied Azucena in her Turkish song “More  Beautiful Than You”  and her dancing and transformed the   Beşçeşmeler square  into  a festival area  .

SHE DEDICATED IT TO TURKISH WOMEN 

Azucena said “Women and children will inevitably face difficulties in their life and you may naturally be frightened but do what you have to do. This is what keeps us together” and then sang for  women in the world subjected to violence and  pressure. Dedicating some of her songs to Turkish women Acuzena  was sent from the stage under thunderous applause.

REPUBLIC FESTIVAL IN NUMBERS 

The festival will start with Maya Azucena and flute  player Burcu Karadağ’s concert and will end with a torchlight parade  on the  29th of October and Suzan Kardeş  and the refugee chorus concert. The events  where episodes of the Republic series, which treats the founding  of the Republic and the events that occurred during this interval, will be screened, will also host an exhibition by Turgut Kahraman’ “Those Who Touched History and a play titled “ From the founding to Independence , Republic is  an Undying  Love”. Also the  Maltepe Municipality Turkish Classical Music Chorus will give concerts under the leadership of the Conductor Füsun Batum in the parks of the borough. During the Republic events to be organized by Amateur football clubs titled “The Republic is Mine”, a huge  concert  will be given by  much loved performer Volkan Konak at the Gülsüyü Stadium on  21st of October. The festival to be attended by  Prof. Dr. Türkan  Cultural Centre will host 14 Concerts,17 Plays,6 Film screening ,12 Childrens plays ,16 Childrens workshops ,18 Exhibitions i5 Interviews
6 World Culture meetings (Bosnia-Sancak, Azerbaijani, Spain, Russia, Switzerland Cuban day.).
